Initiative targets planting of thousands of trees to combat deforestation

Kitui County has launched a forest replenishing programme targeting the planting of over 200,000 tree seedlings in degraded forest areas, as part of the national 15 billion trees agenda.
The programme brings together the county government, national government agencies and community forest associations to restore tree cover in a county that has faced recurrent droughts.
"Trees are our best defense against the effects of climate change. Every resident has a role to play in this restoration effort," said a county environment officer.
