Mt Kenya and Ukambani at political crossroads
New battlegrounds of succession, loyalty, and development politics
Updated

Mt Kenya governors are deeply divided between loyalty to President William Ruto’s UDA and resistance from Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), with Kirinyaga, Meru, Embu, and Kiambu emerging as key battlegrounds. The region’s county chiefs are mostly aligned with Ruto, but Gachagua is aggressively fielding challengers, while Deputy President Kithure Kindiki is consolidating Mt Kenya East governors behind his long-term succession bid. Governors loyal to President Ruto include Embu’s Cecily Mbarire, Tharaka Nithi (Muthomi Njuki of Tharaka Nithi, and Meru’s Isaac Mutuma. From the west side of the mountain Ruto is enjoying support from governor Kimani Wamatangi of Kiambu, and Irungu Kang’ata of Murang’a. They Publicly backing Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027 and seen as anchors of UDA’s dominance in Mt Kenya. Their support strengthens Ruto’s grassroots networks and weakens Gachagua’s influence. Gachagua’s Counter-Strategy Rigathi Gachagua (DCP leader) is attempting to unseat sitting governors by sponsoring alternative candidates: in Embu Gachagua is onsidering Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji against Mbarire. In Meru he is backing Mithika Linturi against Mutuma. In Kiambu the former DP is fronting John Mwaura against Wamatangi. While in Murang’a he is eyeing Jamleck Kamau against Kang’ata. His push has deepened divisions but has not yet secured endorsements from any sitting governor. Kirinyaga as a swing county Governor Anne Waiguru remains influential but faces growing pressure from state-aligned leaders and grassroots mobilization led by Dennis Itumbi and Kimani Ichung’wah. Kirinyaga is increasingly seen as a political battleground where both UDA and DCP are testing strategies. Mt Kenya East succession politics Governors in Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Isiolo are rallying behind DP Kithure Kindiki as their preferred presidential candidate for 2032.They argue Mt Kenya East has long supported leaders from Mt Kenya West and now demand reciprocity. This bloc is positioning Kindiki as Ruto’s natural successor, citing development projects as proof of loyalty. Implications Sitting governors’ loyalty to Ruto secures UDA’s dominance, but Gachagua’s challengers could fracture the vote. Mt Kenya East governors’ push for Kindiki in 2032 risks creating tension with Mt Kenya West leaders, If Waiguru shifts allegiance or faces strong opposition, Kirinyaga could swing national outcomes. Mt Kenya governors are largely pro-Ruto, but Gachagua’s insurgency and Kindiki’s succession ambitions are reshaping alliances. For Meru, Governor Mutuma is firmly in Ruto’s camp and a vocal supporter of Kindiki, meaning local politics will likely revolve around defending UDA dominance against Gachagua-backed challengers.
It is a fact that the battle for the soul of Mt Kenya has shifted to the county level, with governors emerging as the most critical players in the region’s turbulent political realignment. While most governors remain firmly in President William Ruto’s camp, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has launched an aggressive counter-offensive through his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), setting the stage for bruising contests in 2027.
Gachagua’s Counter-Mobilization But Gachagua is not retreating quietly. Through DCP, he is sponsoring challengers to unseat sitting governors, hoping to weaken Ruto’s dominance. In Embu, Manyatta MP John Gitonga Mukunji is being positioned against Governor Mbarire. In Meru, Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi is tipped to challenge Mutuma. Kiambu could see businessman John Mwaura take on Wamatangi, while Murang’a may witness Jamleck Kamau’s return against Kang’ata. “This is not just about 2027,” a DCP insider remarked. “It is about building a power base that can negotiate Mt Kenya’s future beyond Ruto.” Kindiki’s succession bid Meanwhile, Mt Kenya East governors are rallying behind Deputy President Kithure Kindiki as their preferred successor to Ruto in 2032. Governors from Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Isiolo argue that Mt Kenya East has long played second fiddle to Mt Kenya West and now deserves its turn at the presidency. Governor Mutuma of Meru has been particularly vocal, insisting that Kindiki’s loyalty to Ruto and his development agenda make him the natural heir. Implications The emerging three-way contest – Ruto’s incumbency, Gachagua’s insurgency, and Kindiki’s succession – threatens to fracture Mt Kenya’s once-unified voting bloc. Analysts warn that if governors split along East-West lines, the region could lose its bargaining power in national politics. “The governors are no longer just administrators,” said Prof. Gitile Naituli, a political scientist. “They are kingmakers, and their choices will determine whether Mt Kenya speaks with one voice or becomes a house divided.” Political analysts agree that governors are the new frontline in a high-stakes political war. With Ruto relying on incumbents, Gachagua fielding challengers, and Kindiki positioning for the future, the region is entering its most unpredictable phase since the 2013 Jubilee wave.
Ukambani governors face shifting sands as wiper grip weakens The once-solid Ukambani voting bloc is showing signs of fragmentation, with governors in Kitui, Machakos, and Makueni navigating a turbulent political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections. While Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka remains the region’s towering figure, his dominance is increasingly challenged by rising leaders who promise empowerment, development, and direct access to state resources. Kitui’s crowded succession race Governor Julius Malombe (Wiper) is serving his final term, but the battle for his successor has already begun. Senator Enoch Wambua, MP Makali Mulu, Woman Rep Irene Kasalu, and former Governor Charity Ngilu are all positioning themselves for the Wiper ticket. Corporate figures such as Nicholas Mulila of Safaricom and activist Musili Kauta add further intrigue. “The real contest in Kitui is not at the ballot but within Wiper’s nomination process,” noted a local analyst. “Whoever secures Kalonzo’s blessing will likely carry the county.” Machakos where UDA is making inroads Governor Wavinya Ndeti (Wiper) faces mounting pressure to deliver on infrastructure and youth employment promises. Meanwhile, Mwala MP Vincent Kawaya (UDA) is emerging as a formidable challenger, leveraging his ties to President Ruto to promise jobs and direct state investment. Machakos, long considered a Wiper stronghold, is now increasingly competitive. Urban voters, especially youth, are warming to UDA’s message of empowerment and opportunity. Development politics rising of Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. (Wiper) enjoys strong popularity, but Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse (Maendeleo Chap Chap) is steadily gaining ground. Mutuse’s strategy is rooted in tangible development – roads, markets, and government services – coupled with his access to national government networks. “Makueni voters are pragmatic,” said a political observer. “They want leaders who can deliver projects, not just rhetoric. Mutuse is capitalizing on that sentiment.” Kalonzo’s Waning Grip For decades, Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper Party has been the unifying force in Ukambani. But with governors and MPs increasingly charting independent paths, his ability to deliver the region as a bloc is under threat. Analysts warn that fragmentation could weaken Ukambani’s bargaining power in national succession politics. “Ukambani is no longer a monolith,” said Prof. Naituli. “Kalonzo still commands respect, but younger leaders are redefining politics around empowerment and development.” Implications for 2027 and Beyond Kitui will likely remain Wiper-dominated, but factional battles could split the vote. Machakos is emerging as a battleground, with UDA gaining traction. Makueni could swing, depending on whether Mutuse consolidates his development agenda. Ukambani governors are navigating a delicate balance between loyalty to Kalonzo Musyoka and the rising appeal of development-driven politics. With Kitui’s crowded succession race, Machakos’ growing UDA influence, and Makueni’s pragmatic shift, the region is poised to play a decisive role in shaping Kenya’s political future.
