Dr. Mutembei Kigige, PhD, OGW —The accomplished educationist & Strategic Leader
Updated

Behind the growth, innovation and transformation taking place at The Meru National Polytechnic is a leadership philosophy centered on skills, opportunity, innovation and service. Dr. Mutembei Kigige, PhD, OGW, is an accomplished educationist and strategic leader who serves as the Chief Principal of The Meru National Polytechnic, providing direction in the institution’s pursuit of excellence in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
Kigige is an academic and professional whose success story is rooted in education, research, and leadership in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector. He earned his PhD in Business Administration (Finance) from Kenya Methodist University in 2025, focusing on governance and financing in TVET institutions. His journey highlights resilience, family support, and a commitment to improving education systems in Kenya. Under his leadership, MNP has continued to expand both its capacity and access to skills training, with thousands of trainees drawn from all 47 counties, alongside the expansion of training through external campuses. A major milestone has been the institution’s transition into a Qualifications Awarding Institution, enabling MNP to develop, assess and certify its own qualifications. The institution has also fully implemented Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) across its approved curricula, strengthening the connection between training and industry needs. Dr. Kigige’s leadership has also seen MNP deepen its focus on industry partnerships and Dual TVET, creating stronger pathways between classroom learning and the workplace. The institution’s recent recognition in the Dual TVET programme further reflects this direction. The transformation extends to infrastructure and technology. MNP has invested in an E-Learning Centre, ODeL Studio, digital learning boards, virtual reality training, MNP TV and smart classrooms. New and expanded infrastructure includes an Automotive Workshop, solar-powered facilities, the EASTRIP Centre of Excellence in Building and Construction Technology and a new Administration Block. His leadership has equally supported innovation, entrepreneurship and practical production, with initiatives such as the MERPOL Banana Flour enterprise and other trainee-led innovations demonstrating how skills can be turned into products and solutions. Through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), MNP is also creating pathways for experienced workers to have their existing skills formally recognized and certified—helping to widen access to qualifications and opportunities. Beyond institutional growth, Dr. Kigige is an education researcher and scholar whose work has examined issues such as government financing and the performance of TVET institutions, reflecting his interest in evidence-based approaches to strengthening skills development. Dr. Kigige has consistently emphasized that TVET is not just about certificates, but about equipping people with the skills, confidence and innovation needed to create opportunities and transform communities.
Anderson Mutembei Kigige’s success story is not just about academic achievement—it’s about transforming vocational education into a powerful tool for national development. His journey illustrates how research, leadership, and community engagement can converge to create lasting impact.
