Embu County plans to plant 200,000 trees within one hour during Mazingira Day celebrations, County Commissioner Maurice Nalyanya Wanyonyi has said. The initiative supports the government’s national tree-growing campaign and efforts to increase forest cover across Kenya. Speaking during a Mazingira Day planning committee meeting at the County Commissioner’s boardroom, Wanyonyi said the committee had started mapping areas where indigenous tree species would be planted. He said the exercise would involve 7,000 people planting trees simultaneously between 11 a.m. and midday to help Kenya break the Guinness World Records. County Forest Conservator Elizabeth Kariuki said the exercise would be conducted at Njukiiri and Irangi forests, Maranga Hills, Kiangombe area in Mbeere South, as well as various schools and colleges. She said the selected sites would enable residents, institutions and other stakeholders to participate in the tree-growing exercise. The national Mazingira Day celebrations will be held in Trans Nzoia County on October 10, 2026. Wanyonyi said the national target was to plant six million trees within one hour on the day, calling on residents and institutions to participate.
